I get this when trying to patch from 1.5.9 to current:

Can someone help me?

You need to ensure that the Apache user can write to all of your folders or switch to FTP mode to ensure that you can set things up. Hosts with suPHP enabled by default won't have this issue and you might also be able to change the permissions to get it to work properly but if Joomla! can't write those files it can't update them.

I'm having the same issue.

basically I have 2 sites on my hosting account, one root default site (update manager works fine) and the second site, is in a sub-folder on the root directory (giving update manager problems).

so I have FTP'd in and temporarily provided permissions 777 to the file.php

Do you need to do something else, or give specific folders temp
777 access, I don't want to go in allowing everything full access.

i would really appreciate your help here, this is a great component.
