I'm beginning to work with 1.6 and hope to be ready to go when RC1 comes out. I haven't been able to find a discussion of Update Manager's plans for 1.6. Thanks.

Joomla! 1.6 features a core updater and third party extension updater mechanism. At that point in time the updater won't be required.
