Magnetz Review

All innovative, oddball games have a magnetic aura for a while, before the novelty wears off. This is most certainly the case with Relax Gaming’s latest creation, Magnetz, which harnesses the power of magnetism to literally suck symbols sideways onto the 4 grids. Yes, that’s right, you will be playing with 4 identical 3x4 grids in this game, and these grids will expand and merge in different ways during the somewhat unusual bonus features.

You’re far from dealing with your regular grid slot here, and most of the action is concentrated into the bonus round. The game area is set in a futuristic/dystopian looking factory of some kind, and visually the game is quite a pleasing experience. The gameplay has an “oddly satisfying” rhythm to it, and the spinning core magnets are a nice touch. These can trigger the Flux Respins feature, which is a nice break from the base game grind, and the respins is also your best shot at landing enough bonus letter symbols to trigger the free spins round.

The grid sizes combined with the relatively low symbol values makes the base game quite unforgiving. It’s impossible to squeeze out the most of the winning clusters also, as 12 symbols is the most you can land on 1 grid. Matching core magnets make the grids merge however, which can increase the size of the clusters up to 20+ symbols, which pays the most. This is even more likely in the bonus round however, and here the top win of 2,000x your stake is possible. All in all, Magnetz is fun for a while, but it feels a bit constipated and constrained because of the small grids, and the potential is not exactly impressive for a volatile game either.

What are the bonus features?

There is a “W” wild symbol in this game, and it can land anywhere on either of the 4 grids. It will step in and substitute for all the regular symbols, and help you form winning combos. The wild symbol can also land with a multiplier value sometimes, between 1x and 5x.

If you land more than one multiplier wild in a winning cluster, the multiplier values will be multiplied with each other.

The 4 centre magnets (1x4 in size) will rotate and display 1 of the 6 regular symbols on every spin. You trigger the Flux Respins feature whenever you land at least 5 symbols that match the adjacent centre magnet. The triggering symbols will be stuck to the centre magnet, while all other symbols are removed from the grid.

Also wild symbols will stick to the magnet if they land, and the respins continue as long as you keep adding matching symbols to the cluster. You will land bonus symbols more frequently during the Flux Respins feature, and these will also keep the process going. You can even land 5 matching symbols on another grid that matches the corresponding core magnet, and this will trigger a new Flux Respin round.

If you get the same symbol on at least 2 of the adjacent core magnets, you trigger the Magnetic Merge feature. This will effectively merge the involved grids, which again makes it easier to trigger the Flux Respins and/or land larger cluster wins.

Free spins in Magnetz

You will see the word BONUS spelled out in the row that separates the upper and the lower grids. You light up each letter by landing corresponding bonus symbols, but it resets on each new spin. This means that you either need to land all 5 letters in a single spin, or you need to get lucky during the Flux Respins feature in order to trigger the free spins bonus round.

In our experience, you will get more bonus symbols during the Flux Respins feature than in the base game, and this seems to be by design.

Anyway, you will get 5 free spins when the whole word is highlighted, and this might not seem like all that much. However, you will benefit from more Flux Respins during the bonus round, not least since the upper and lower grids merge into one. You will now play on 2 massive grids with 9 rows and 3 reels, instead of the regular 4 x 3x4 setup.

How to play

The gameplay is hardly as complicated as it might sound when you read about it, and the game interface is pretty standard stuff from Relax Gaming. We will take a closer look at everything you should know about how to play Magnetz slot here, but feel free to skip to the next part of the review if you’re already well-versed in how to play online slots.

The hamburger menu opens up the game’s paytable and info section for you, and here you can read all about the different features. The illustrations might also help clarify things for you, and you can scroll down to get to the actual paytable. You need 5 matching symbols in a cluster to win, and the game comes with 3 higher value symbols and 3 symbols of lower value.

The symbols look like different colored metal blocks with simple configurations on them, and the red star symbol is the highest payer here.

The paytable is dynamic, which means the symbol values are updated according to your chosen bet level, and the payouts range from 200x to 15x for 20+ in a cluster. Most of the time you will get smaller clusters though, and only 12 matching symbols fit into each 3x4 grid. This means that bigger cluster wins will happen only during the Magnet Merge feature or the bonus round.

The gear icon takes you into the game settings, where you can turn on/off sound, music and turn on the spacebar to spin. You can also choose “auto continue”, which means you will not get stuck before or after a bonus round if you have the autoplay feature on. The intro splash screen can also be turned off here, if you want to save time the next time you load the game.

You can set your total stake via the money stack icon, and the bet range goes from 10p to £50 per spin. The double arrow icon turns on the turbo option, which means increased pace and faster action when you play. The autoplay feature comes with between 10 and 1,000 autospins, and the infinity symbol will even allow the spins to go on until the end of time, if you can afford it.

The 200 Spins Magnetz Experience

We always appreciate innovation and new ideas, and we therefore very much looked forward to our 200 spins test session on Magnetz slot. Relax Gaming has done something quite unique here, and we were filled with anticipation as we set up 10 play money credits per spin and loaded in our first 100 autospins. You can check out the highlights in the video below.

The rhythmic sound of the game reminds us of a beating heart or a pumping breathing machine, and Magnetz scores 7.5 out of 10 on our unofficial “oddly satisfying” gameplay scale. A 10 on this scale means you hardly care about winning or losing, while 1 means your stomach is tied up in a knot. The pace is very good with the fast play option turned on, and there are few annoying delays or hiccups.

The volatility is somewhat high, so we had our fair share of dead spins and smaller wins for sure. In fact, most of our first 100 spins was rather uneventful, which is why only the final 100 spins are included in the video. We landed an okay 4x win from half-way filling the 4 grids with the purple crescent moon symbol. This might not sound like much, but it sticks out compared to what else we got most of the time.

The Flux Respins feature got triggered not long after, and we spelled out “BONU” already on the triggering spin. The following respin gave us the S we needed to complete the word, and we thus triggered the bonus round with 5 free spins to go. The enlarged grid was impressive to behold, and we landed a Flux Respin win of 5x on our very first spin.

We got a smaller flux respin win on our next spin, but the free spins tally was shrinking too fast for our liking. With 1 spin left to go, we finally hit something close to pay dirt. A large cluster of yellow pyramid symbols triggered the Flux Respins yet again, and this time we managed to rack up an okay 15.5x win. All in all we won 25.5x our stake from the bonus round, which was not exactly impressive, but we’ll probably be back for more at some point.

Review Summary

It’s always risky for developers to deviate too much from the tried and tested slot formulas, but without such bravery we would still be spinning 3-reelers with fruit symbols, no. As much credit as we give Relax Gaming for trying with Magnetz slot, there are, unfortunately, a few things standing in the way of this being a huge success. First of all, the 4 small grids feel a bit suffocating and claustrophobic, and they are not large enough to offer more than a 20x win if you fill one of them with the highest paying symbol.

Another thing is the lengthy dead spins and minute wins periods you get here. If that is followed by an uneventful bonus round (like what happened to us above), it’s not all that motivating to start over again. The Flux Respins feature does help to smooth things over a bit, but will many times not really deliver significant wins. Novelty alone can only take a game so far, and we are afraid this thing would need more tweaking and fine-tuning to reach long-term mainstream popularity.

Given the highly innovative and unusual concept offered by Relax here, no game out there is gonna be exactly like Magnetz. However, you can check out 179 Cluster Pays games in our catalog at the time of writing, and if futuristic themes are your thing, we have a solid bunch those kind of games too. Below we’ve picked out some other games with highly unusual reel setups and features for you.

Gold Volcano - has one of the most unusual reel setups we’ve seen, and it basically resembles a volcano in shape. It even has reel positions on the outside for eruptions, and this is really a must try game from Play’n Go. The lava builds towards eruption with consecutive cascading wins, and fully erupts to expand the whole grid massively in the bonus round. You can win up to 10,000x your stake on this highly explosive and volatile title.

Tetris Extreme - since the game at hand reminds us of a sideways tetris (not least during the respins feature), we thought an actual Tetris slot would fit in nicely here. It even comes with the authentic tetris music, and there is a progressive line clear multiplier that goes all the way up to 50x. The bonus round is triggered by clearing 15+ lines tetris style, and you can win up to 2,500x your stake in this highly entertaining and somewhat volatile game.

Star Clusters Megaclusters - is a brand new cluster engine that has the potential of becomeing as revolutionizing as the Megaways engine has been. Big Time Gaming is behind this innovation too, and you’ll see winning symbols split into smaller versions and offer cascading wins when they cannot get any smaller. The bonus round has a progressive wild multiplier, and wins above 20,000x is possible here.
