I've just install the update manager on a VPS system and when i try to run the update I got one of two errors.

If i try to update via the "1.6 Extracter", I get a write error:

Failed to extract archive!
If i try to update via the "1.5 Extracter" i get:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 52428800 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 5703681 bytes) in /var/www/vhosts/scouthostinguk.co.uk/httpdocs/libraries/joomla/filesystem/archive/tar.php on line 154

Any ideas on how i can fix these errors

I had a similar issue. Try this:

In components parameters setting change "Extraction Method" to 1.5 Default Extractor.

This worked for me.

Hi,

I have had the same issue so I followed the above suggestion to enable the 1.5 Extractor. What was interesting was when I went to give it another go it said that there was now "Nothing to update" and asked if I wanted to force a full update. I looked over to the version number to see that I would appear to have Version 1.5.15 but if it failed to extract can this be correct?

Hi All,
I'm having the same issue with Step 3. I get an error "Unable to write entry" and "Failed to extract archive" :(
I attempted to use the 1.5 Extractor but received the same error.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all who are having issues. MAN WHAT A PAIN!

I have been using JUpdate on this same server for a while with no issues. I go and update, and see that there is joomla 1.5.17 out now. so I try an update. No go. I see in the parameters that there is a 1.6 and 1.5 extraction method. I set to 1.5 default extraction, same error, so I try the third option, 1.5 pear tar and get just the message, failed to extract tar. um MAN.

the error I get is :
        * Unable to write entry

it appears there is a file system permissions? where is is trying to extract. what is going on? All my permissions come up writable in the sys info for joomla. So I tried chmod 777 my whole joomla folder and all sub folders/files. with 1.5 default extraction.

now I get this bit of result!
        * JFolder::create: Infinite loop detected
        * Unable to create destination

Issue Might be bellow with incorrect path! trying to write outside of hosted folder with open_basedir active!!!
